Starting to Unbox Not Another Box and Pack Attack - Dollarama 100 Magic Cards

So first, let's go through the second box of goodies Mike from Not Another Baseball Card Blog sent me last week.

First up....1987 Donruss. Not a set I have much of, about 40 cards, and Mike more than doubled it adding about 50 more cards to the set. I am not a big fan of the border design, but it 80s...it's late 80s....I can see this set coming along for completing at some point...

I like the retro look of those old Pittsburgh unis. Some other stars of the day and Hal McRae....definitely one of those playuers I always felt I saw too many cards for. Not sure why, just always seemed to be in packs back in the day.

1987 Leaf...

Yup, have to have some Canadian content, so a Leaf card will cut it. Funny enough, this doubles the number of cards I have - from one to two! Not sure why I don't have more of these, but that is the way it is.

Next up - 1986 Donruss...

No huge stars in the Rated Rookies subset, but definitely some 80s power in the other cards he sent. Dawson always made for good cards - and had such a great run with Montreal in the day. I am not a big an of the design of these cards, nd wish the colours were team matched, but can't win them all.

1986 Donruss The Rookies...

Just a sample of what was sent - about half the cards in this set now. The colour makes me like the 1986 Donruss base set border colour better, but these are glossy which is nicer in hand.

1988 Leaf...

Although I am Canadian, for whatever reason I didn't see much Lead product in the later 80s, just worked out that way, so glad Mike was able to pull some together here for me. Again, sent more than I am scanning - just wasn't going to scan everything, but a nice bunch here. That Jack McDowell card just seems so wrong as I picture him as a much older vet...oh, and John Ferrell...not my fave  guy either...

There were a bunch more cards, including some Jays which I never expect much of because Mike collects them too, but I will share more tomorrow. To finish off the Mike cards for today, some collection specific keepers...

Error/Variation cards...

I know Mike sent them just for being 1986 Donruss cards, but they got to the error/variation binder for now. I'll move them out and to a set if I try to finish it off later.

As for these...

I don't care that Diamond Kings are a subset - I always consider them like inserts as they are just to awesome not to try and collect by themselves. As for the Esso cards, being a bit oddball in being Esso produced, definite keepers there also. I had a few already, but nice to add some more (and some Leafs which I will show tomorrow!).

Was able to find a couple more of these at Dollarama's lately, so I figured I would crack into another one today. Definitely was looking very downhill early. Through the first 70 cards or so, there was not a lot and no artifact cards that I would keep. Luckily, the last bit went well and I ended up with the following:

Not as many as last, but atleast I ended up with the 5 keepers., all needed.

A sample of the early cards that came out - they always interest me more than the newer. Overall, not as old as the cards in the first repack, but otherwise similar make up of rare and uncommon cards, as well as a couple foil parallels.

This, I did want to highlight. I can understand with these collectible card packs, that there can be duplicates - but 5 of the same card is a bit excessive, especially in a 100 card bag.

Overall, not nearly as good as the last one...but maybe the third will break the time on whether these are really worthwhile. Have to check into that with a future post.

Not Just Another Box and Returning to the past

First, had the second box of cards show up from Mike at Not Another Baseball Card Blog. At a quick glance some nice 80s ads, but I will go through them and post some detail on the weekend of the excellent cards. Much appreciated Mike, and thanks for the trade in advance.

As for the Santa Lot today, been a while since we got a few of these, but here they are as the...

Highlights:

Since I traded a number a way already, not sure if any of these would be dupes really, but at this point they are adds to the collection.

Have to include a Leaf always, especially Sundin.

The rest
Keepers:

Generally sets I have seen bits of here, and happy to get more of. A good example of "standard shot" here as with all the hockey player skating poses. Almost identical in the case of Zetterberg and STerling.

Birthday Gift, Not Another Box, and Take the Crown

First, a quick birthday related post (as my birthday was yesterday)...I got these...

These two boxes were picked up in 2015 when we went to the US and my wife put aside to give to me later....well, it's later. So let's see what packs we get....

From the 10 pack...

Out of the 10 packs, five to keep for the unopened pack collection. All relatively new, because frankly, I don't buy much as it is new.

As for the dupes which will be opened at a later date...

Looking forward to opening at least one of these packs - just to be clear, I am talking about Heritage, not Triple Play. The main Topps are nice too.

Getting to the World's Greatest Chase, the keepers are...

I am glad the 1989 39 card cello pack is new to me so I can keep it unopened, but the best one to me is the Golden Age - not a pack I see much of, so a nice pickup. Most of the rest, I had other variations of the packs (like the 1991 Donruss Series 1 - different ad on the back from the other pack I have).

For the packs I am saving to open later...

Bugs me when they do a section of rack pack like this 1992 Fleer.

Fun opening these boxes (which is why I picked them up to begin with), and some future interest in opening the packs I am not keeping unopened.

So Mike over at Not Another Baseball Card Blog had recently talked about an excess of 1987 Topps cards and I mentioned that I would probably collect the set at some point and wouldn't mind the cards, especially if the alternative was him getting rid of the cards. Lo and behold those, and a few other cards came my way this week. Let's start with the non-1987 Topps cards...

The 1990-91 Pro Set adds are cards needed for that set which continues on it's merry way (not quite down to a full list to share here, but getting close, and they are on TCDB as well). The 1991-92 O Pee Chee insert set is now down to just three cards to complete the 66 card set too. Really appreciate the help on these - thanks - especially as I know you aren't a hockey card collector (save for the couple player collections I believe).

In addition to these and the 1987 Topps...there is this one 1987 Topps Traded card....

A nice Jays add as I have the Traded set sealed and complete, but like having another copy for the Jays collection.

So with 1987 Topps, my set was 39.4% complete...afterwards...81.2%. I'm not going to bother putting them all up here, but wow - awesome help on the set, and knocks it down to about 150 cards left, much more manageable.

Thanks again Mike, as always.

When I have these kinds of pulls from the Santa Lot, I am torn on whether it is a good day or a bad day. Reason is, I get something I wouldn't otherwise likely end up with, but really like having, but the trade off is - many dupes or cards I don't need.

Highlight:

Very close to picking both keepers, but since this is not only a Leaf, but a parallel as well - it takes the cake today. Stajan is one of the Leafs I enjoyed most in the 00s, so glad to get the parallel from 2009-10 O Pee Chee.

The rest
Keepers:

A nice die cut insert from 2000 Pacific. I'm not sure I love the design - I like the shine on the front, but a matte or flat finish would have been much better than the "scratch" look.

Traders:

Plenty today. From a couple French 1991-92 Pro Set cards to additional 2005 Upper Deck Classic baseball, as well as the typical suspects in 2004-05 Ultra Basketball, 2007 Topps and 2008 Donruss Threads football.

Bo knows how to whittle down my wants and Rolen a new set

I received an e-mail from reader Bo who was kind enough to go through my most wanted list and knock two of my sets down to a single remaining card for each to complete them. Bo was able to whittle down both 1990 Donruss and 1991 Ultra by sending the following:

Many thanks in getting these down to a card apiece. Hopefully you get the envelope I sent back to you in the next few days, hope the cards work for you Bo.

You'd think that being 9000 plus cards in we wouldn't see a new set, but we get just that in the keeper cards today. Still, not enough for the highlight of the 20 cards today though - but very close.

Highlight:

Another add for the 2009-10 McDonalds set. Any such food/insert card that I need is always a great add, especially with a nice design like this.

The rest
Keepers:

Definitely the newer side of sets through the Santa set. This is the first 2001 Fleer Showcase card. The base set is 160 cards however the last 45 cards are serial numbered. Seeing as this is the first card I've seen, I presume I won't be getting many more, but at least it is a small set. If I do get a few more I really like, might have to consider getting more. A solid card and decent enough design. Other than suffering from removing all of the background, this is alright. Also excited to see any A&G cards as I don't have many, and don't buy many.

Traders:

A number of trade cards with some decent 2005 Upper Deck classics dupes, but also a couple not-so-usual dupes with an Ovechkin 2006 POG, and the Andre Johnson Heritage card as well.
